In Madrid, the youth basketball environment feels vibrant with the arrival of two promising young Uruguayans. Xabier López and Diego Fernández, players from Fundación CB Canarias, have joined this Saturday the talent concentration organized by the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB).
The event comes after their participation in the 'Final 6' of the U League, a tournament that brings together the best youth basketball teams in Spain, where players under 22 years of age compete. This event took place in Burgos, and the young Canarians have left a significant mark on the competition.
The training camp, which began on Friday, aims to evaluate the evolution of players over 20 years of age who are no longer in the training teams. On this occasion, the group is made up of 12 players, all under the watchful eye of the absolute men's Spanish coach, Chus Mateo, and Paco Redondo, his assistant and FEB men's team training coordinator.
Outstanding performances in the U League
Xabier López has had a notable performance in the second phase of the U League, averaging 15.3 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. In just four games, he accumulated 131 rating credits, standing out with an average of 24 points and 12.25 rebounds. His performance has caught the attention of coaches, who see in him a promising future for Spanish basketball.
For his part, Diego Fernández has demonstrated his ability on the court with memorable performances, such as the 31 points he scored against Valencia Basket in the first phase. His career is even more notable if one considers that last season he made history by making his debut in the Endesa League with the club's first team, becoming the second youngest debutant in the history of Fundación CB Canarias, at just 17 years, 4 months and 16 days.
The participation of these young talents in the concentration in Madrid is an important step in their careers. The FEB seeks to identify and develop players who can be part of the future of Spanish basketball. The presence of López and Fernández in this camp is a reflection of the growth of basketball in Uruguay, where more and more young people stand out in international leagues.
A future in basketball
Uruguayan basketball has seen a resurgence in recent years, with an increase in the quality of its players and greater interest in the sport. The U League, which has the collaboration of the FEB, the ACB and the Higher Sports Council (CSD), has been fundamental in providing a platform to young talents. These types of initiatives allow players to measure themselves against their peers in a competitive environment, which is crucial for their development.
The FEB, aware of the importance of these events, has implemented a training program that seeks not only to improve the technical skills of the players, but also to prepare them mentally for the challenges they will face in the future. The supervision of experienced coaches such as Chus Mateo and Paco Redondo ensures that young people receive the necessary guidance to advance their careers.
Basketball in Uruguay continues to grow, and the participation of players like Xabier López and Diego Fernández in this type of concentrations is an indication that the country is on the right path. With the support of institutions and the dedication of young people, the future of Uruguayan basketball seems promising.
The FEB will continue to hold these concentrations to continue nurturing national talent and keep Spain in the elite of world basketball.
The camp will last several days, where players are expected to show their potential and prepare for future commitments.
